This medicine contains the active ingredient theophylline which belongs to a group of medicines called bronchodilators. These medicines make the breathing easier by widening the airways in the lungs. Theophylline is used for the treatment of asthma by reducing the symptoms (tight chest, wheezing and coughing) and preventing the attack, as well as for other chest problems such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and chronic bronchitis (disease of the lungs that makes breathing difficult).

Is Theophylline suitable for me?

Theophylline is not suitable for everyone. Do not use it

• if you are allergic to theophylline or to other ingredients of this medicine
• if it is meant for a child under 6 months

In particular, you must tell the doctor if you:

• have seizures
• have heart or liver problems
• have an overactive thyroid gland
• have high blood pressure
• have a stomach ulcer
• drink alcohol, or smoke
• are currently unwell with a high temperature
• have porphyria (this is a rare inherited blood disorder)
• are pregnant, trying to get pregnant or breastfeeding

Theophylline interacts with other medicines. It is most important that you tell the doctor all the medications and herbal supplements that you are currently taking.

How should I take Theophylline?

This medicine is available in form of modified-release capsule and prolonged-release capsule.

You should take theophylline exactly as instructed by your doctor or pharmacist.

• The usual dose for adults is between 250 and 500 mg twice a day.
• The usual dose for children is between 120 and 500 mg twice a day.

Do not use more of it, do not use it more often, or do not use it for a longer time than your doctor instructed. Do not take two doses together if you miss a dose.

What are Theophylline side effects?

Like all medicines theophylline can cause side effects, including:

• gastric irritation
• nausea, vomiting
• abdominal discomfort
• dizziness
• palpitations
• fall in blood pressure
• headache
• diarrhea
• insomnia
• agitation
• frequent urination
