Gonorrhea (the Clap) – symptoms and treatment
Gonorrhea (the Clap) is a very common bacterial infection of the sexual organs. If not taken seriously, it can cause sterility.
Sometimes gonorrhea is misdiagnosed as chlamydia, due to similar symptoms. It is caused by bacteria gonococci, i.e. Neisseria gonorrhoeae which lives in the reproductive tract, including the urethra and reproductive tract of both men and women.
Gonorrhea has a very high percentage of new infections. In America, statistics recorded almost one million of new infections of the disease each year. Most affected are young adults and teenagers, due to increased promiscuity, i.e. frequent changing of sexual partners.
Like most of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and sexually transmitted infections, it is transmitted through sexual contact, i.e. sexual intercourse. This may include contact with the penis, vagina, anus (anal opening), and even the mouth and throat. It is very easily transmitted from one person to another, which is why the clap has such a high percentage of newly infected. In children, the infection is transmitted most often indirectly, rarely directly through sexual abuse. The spread of infection can be increased by various factors such as: physical effort, menstruation, instrumental interventions, alcohol, and promiscuity.

Symptoms of gonorrhea are generally mild or almost unnoticeable. When there are symptoms, they usually occur between 5 and 30 days after intercourse with an infected person and they are slightly different in men and in women. Since gonorrhea bacterium resides in the sexual organs and the throat, these are the main areas where you have the symptoms of gonorrhea (the clap).

Gonorrhea symptoms in women are:
In the area of the anus, gonorrhea in men has the same symptoms as in women:

The treatment of gonorrhea is usually quite easy. Your doctor will prescribe an antibiotic that will clean the body from infection. Neisseria gonorrhea is sensitive to a number of antibiotics but the penicillin is usually the treatment of choice. In case of penicillin allergy, you may be prescribed tetracycline (Vibramycin), erythromycin (Eryped) and other macrolides (Biaxin, Zithtromax), cephalosporins (Suprax, Ceftin, Kefurox, Zinacef), sulfonamides (Bactrim). Simultaneous treatment of sexual partners is necessary.
In previous years gonorrhea was more easily treated than now, since the bacteria began to adapt and become resistant to the effects of certain antibiotics. Before you start to take medicines, carefully read the instructions and follow the treatment until the end.
Keep in mind that once you have recovered from the clap, which does not mean that you cannot get it again. The clap can easily return if you come into contact with an infected person, and a second treatment of the clap is more difficult than the first one.
If untreated, women may develop pelvic inflammatory disease, which affects more than one million of American women today, even though they do not know they have it, and even though they have no symptoms. If symptoms are present, they are abdominal pain and fever with chills (shivers). If untreated, the disease can damage the channels of the uterus (uterine tube), and result in sterility.
In men, gonorrhea can cause epididymis. This is painful disease, which causes swelling of the testicles, and the result can be sterility, i.e. infertility.
