Product information

This medicine it contains the active ingredient sotalol which belongs to the group of medicines known as beta-blockers. It works by blocking beta-adrenergic receptors which receive nerve signals in your heart and the heart is then beating evenly and more slowly.  Sotalol is prescribed for the treatment of arrhythmia (irregular heartbeats).

Is Sotalol suitable for me?

Sotalol is not suitable for everyone. Do not use it

  • if you are allergic to sotalol, beta blockers or to other ingredients of this medicine
  • have asthma, lung disease or bronchitis
  • have severe circulation problem
  • have a tumor of the adrenal gland (phaeochromocytoma)
  • if you suffer from a condition called Raynaud’s syndrome
  • if you suffer from kidney failure
  • have too much acid in the blood
  • if you have certain serious heart or blood vessel disorders

In particular, you must tell the doctor if you:

  • are pregnant, trying to get pregnant or breast-feeding
  • have diabetes
  • have any heart problems
  • have any liver or kidney problems
  • have muscle weakness called myasthenia gravis
  • are going to have an operation
  • have a type of chest pain called Prinzmetal's angina
  • suffer from dry eyes
  • have (or have had) psoriasis (a recurring skin rash)
  • have a thyroid problem

Sotalol interacts with other medicines. It is most important that you tell the doctor all the medications and herbal supplements that you are currently taking.

How should I take Sotalol?

This medicine is available in form of a tablet.

You should take sotalol exactly as instructed by your doctor or pharmacist.

  • The usual dose is between 80 mg and 320 mg per day, taken as a single dose or in two divided doses.
  • The maximum dose is 640 mg a day.

Do not use more of it, do not use it more often, or do not use it for a longer time than your doctor instructed. Do not miss any doses and take the medicine at the same time each day. Do not take two doses together if you miss a dose.

What are Sotalol side effects?

Like all medicines sotalol can cause side effects, including:

  • slow, fast or irregular heartbeats
  • chest pain
  • fainting, light headedness
  • breathlessness
  • swelling over hands/feet
  • muscle cramps
  • hearing disturbances, vision disturbances
  • altered sense of taste
  • fever
  • headache, dizziness
  • sleep disturbances
  • mood changes, depressed mood, anxiety
