Product information

This medicine contains the active ingredient ofloxacin which belongs to a group of medicines called fluoroquinolones. These antibiotics are used to stop several bacterial infections by destroying bacteria and preventing their growth. This medicine is prescribed for the treatment of eye infections caused by some bacteria (symptoms are tears in the eyes, redness in the white of the eye or inner eyelid, white discharge from the eye and swollen eyes, blurred vision).

Is Ofloxacin suitable for me?

Ofloxacin is not suitable for everyone. Do not use it

  • if you are allergic to ofloxacin or to other ingredients of this medicine

In particular, you must tell the doctor if you:

  • are pregnant, planning to get pregnant, or breastfeeding
  • have defect or ulceration of the surface of the eye
  • have heart problems
  • wear contact lenses

Ofloxacin interacts with other medicines. It is most important that you tell the doctor all the medications and herbal supplements that you are currently taking.

How should I take Ofloxacin?

This medicine is available in form of eye drops.  

You should take ofloxacin exactly as instructed by your doctor or pharmacist.

  • The usual dose is 1 or 2 drops into the affected eye(s) every 2 to 4 hours for the first 2 days, and after that it is 1 or 2 drops 4 times a day.

Do not use more of it, do not use it more often, or do not use it for a longer time than your doctor instructed. Do not miss any doses and take the medicine at the same time each day. Do not take two doses together if you miss a dose.

What are Ofloxacin side effects?

Like all medicines ofloxacin can cause side effects in the eye, including:

  • visual disturbance
  • tearing
  • mild stinging or burning
  • irritation
  • ocular discomfort
  • inflammation
  • redness
  • itching
  • allergic reactions in the eye
  • sensitivity to light
  • eye swelling
  • dryness

Side effects affecting the body:

  • dizziness
  • nausea
  • allergic reactions
  • swelling of the face
  • alteration of the heart rhythm
  • abnormal fast heart rhythm
