PYLOMID

This medicine contains the active ingredient metoclopramide which belongs to a group of medicines called dopamine antagonists. This medicine is from the group of anti-emetics that act on the muscles of the digestive system, so it helps to stop nausea and vomiting. Metoclopramide is used to treat stomach disorders, like heartburn, gas, pain, indigestion, nausea and vomiting of bile; to stop nausea and vomiting caused by migraine (it helps the absorption of analgesics (painkillers) where they operate more efficiently); to stop or prevent nausea and vomiting before and after surgery, after radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

Is Metoclopramide suitable for me?

Metoclopramide is not suitable for everyone. Do not use it

• if you have an allergy (hypersensitivity) to metoclopramide or any other ingredient of this medicine
• if you have bleeding, blockage, perforation or ulcers in your stomach or gut
• if you have a tumor of the adrenal glands known as pheochromocytoma, which can cause high blood pressure
• if you have had surgery of the stomach or intestine in the last 3-4 days
• if you are breastfeeding
• if you have epilepsy
• if you have Parkinson’s disease

In particular, you must tell the doctor if you:

• have liver or kidney problems
• have an inherited blood disorder known as porphyria
• are pregnant or breastfeeding
• have a history of abnormal heart beats or any other heart problems
• have problems with the levels of potassium, sodium and magnesium
• you have any neurological (brain) problems

Metoclopramide interacts with other medicines. It is most important that you tell the doctor all the medications and herbal supplements that you are currently taking.

How should I take Metoclopramide?

This medicine is available in form of a tablet.

You should take metoclopramide exactly as instructed by your doctor or pharmacist.

• The usual dose for tablets is 10 mg, repeated up to 3 times per day.
• The maximum dose per day is 30 mg or 0.5 mg/kg body weight, taken for no longer than 5 days.

Do not use more of it, do not use it more often, or do not use it for a longer time than your doctor instructed. Also, this medicine works best if there is a constant amount in the blood. To help keep this amount constant, do not miss any doses and take the medicine at the same time each day. Do not take two doses together if you miss a dose.

What are Metoclopramide side effects?

Like all medicines metoclopramide can cause side effects, including:          

Very common:

• drowsiness

 Common:

• depression
• uncontrollable movements
• symptoms similar to Parkinson disease (rigidity, tremor)
• restlessness
• high blood pressure
• diarrhea
• weakness  

Uncommon:

• raised levels of a hormone called prolactin in the blood
• irregular periods
• hallucination
• decreased level of consciousness
• slow heartbeat
• allergy
