Product information

This medicine contains the active ingredient ephedrine which belongs to a group of medicines known as nasal decongestants. These medicines relieve symptoms of congestion (stuffy nose), by causing constriction of blood vessels in the mucous membranes of the nose. In this way they reduce swelling of nasal mucosa, relieving the nasal congestion.

Is Ephedrine suitable for me?

Ephedrine is not suitable for everyone. Do not use it

  • if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to Ephedrine, or any of the other ingredients of this medicine
  • if you are taking, or have in the last two weeks taken monoamine oxidase (mao), a medicine used to treat depression
  • if you are taking beta-blockers, medicines used to treat high blood pressure or other heart disease
  • if you have heart disease, high blood pressure or if you have poor circulation of blood.
  • if you have overactive thyroid gland
  • if you suffer from excessive anxiety
  • if you have glaucoma (high intraocular pressure)
  • if you have excessive amounts of adrenaline in the blood
  • if you have recently had surgery of the nose or sinuses
  • if you have difficulty urinating
  • if you are told that you have a type of tumor called pheochromocytoma
  • if you are already using other medicines that help with nasal congestion
  • if the child is younger than 12 years

In particular, you must tell the doctor if you:

  • are pregnant or breast-feeding
  • have asthma
  • have kidney problems
  • have diabetes
  • have prostate problems
  • are elderly

Ephedrine interacts with other medicines. It is most important that you tell the doctor all the medications and herbal supplements that you are currently taking.

How should I take Ephedrine?

This medicine is available in form of nasal drops, solution.

You should take ephedrine exactly as instructed by your doctor or pharmacist. The dose will be prescribed according to your condition and needs.

  • Instill 1 or 2 drops into each nostril. It is applied if necessary, but not more than 4 times a day.

Do not use more of it, do not use it more often, or do not use it for a longer time than your doctor instructed. Do not take two doses together if you miss a dose.

What are Ephedrine side effects?

Like all medicines ephedrine can cause side effects, including:

  • anxiety, fear (paranoia)
  • irritability
  •  restlessness or insomnia
  • delusions (hallucinations)
  • headache
  • nausea, thirst
  •  excretion of greater or less amount of saliva in the mouth than usual
  • vomiting, dry mouth
  • dizziness and fainting
  • weakness and trembling
  • irritation, dryness or pain in the nose
  •  rhinitis caused by medicines
  • inflammation of the skin
  • sweating, redness
  • effects on the heart, for example, palpitations
  • effects on circulation, for example, high or low blood pressure
  • changes in blood sugar and potassium in the blood
  • anorexia
  • shortness of breath
  • expansion of the pupil
