MAXIDEX

This medicine contains the active ingredient dexamethasone which belongs to a group of medicines called corticosteroids. These medicines are used for the reduction of inflammation. Dexamethasone eye drops are prescribed for the treatment of inflammation of the cornea, conjunctiva and iris and connective tissue, and the treatment of the eye inflammation if the eye is not infected.

Is Dexamethasone suitable for me?

Dexamethasone is not suitable for everyone. Do not use it

• if you are allergic to dexamethasone or other ingredients of this medicine
• if you have bacterial eye infections, fungal infections, viral diseases or amoebiasis
• if you have tuberculosis
• if you have damaged cornea, ulceration, lesions with incomplete formation of the covering tissue
• if you have increased intraocular pressure

In particular, you must tell the doctor if you:

o   have an eye infection

o   have increased pressure within the eye (glaucoma)

o   are using any other eye drops

o   are wearing contact lenses

o   are pregnant or breastfeeding

Dexamethasone interacts with other medicines. It is most important that you tell the doctor all the medications and herbal supplements that you are currently taking.

How should I take Dexamethasone?

This medicine is available in form of eye drops and eye ointment.

You should take dexamethasone exactly as instructed by your doctor or pharmacist.

• The usual dose is 1 drop in the eye(s) from 4 to 6 times a day. For the treatment of severe cases, the starting dose is 1 drop every hour, and then it should be gradually reduced to 1 drop every 4 hours.

Do not use more of it, do not use it more often, or do not use it for a longer time than your doctor instructed. Do not miss any doses and take the medicine at the same time each day. Do not take two doses together if you miss a dose.

What are Dexamethasone side effects?

Like all medicines dexamethasone can cause side effects, including:

• stinging, burning, redness or watering of the eyes
• blurred vision
• dry eyes, sensitive to light
