Product information

This medicine contains three active ingredients dexamethasone (corticosteroid), neomycin and polymyxin B (antibiotics). These medicines are prescribed and used for the reduction of inflammation (swelling, redness, and watery eyes) and for the prevention of bacterial infections of the eye.

Is Maxitrol suitable for me?

Maxitrol is not suitable for everyone. Do not use it

  • if you are allergic to dexamethasone), neomycin, polymyxin B or other ingredients of this medicine 
  • if you have a mycobacterial, fungal, or viral eye infection

In particular, you must tell the doctor if you:

  • have a disorder causing a thinning of the eye tissues
  • have allergic reaction
  • wear contact lenses
  • have diabetes, glaucoma or increased eye pressure
  • are pregnant or breastfeeding

Maxitrol interacts with other medicines. It is most important that you tell the doctor all the medications and herbal supplements that you are currently taking.

How should I take Maxitrol?

This medicine is available in form of eye drops and eye ointment.

You should take Maxitrol exactly as instructed by your doctor or pharmacist.

  • The usual starting dose for the eye drops is 1 or 2 drops 6 times a day.
  • The usual dose for ointment is small amount applied 3 to 4 times a day.

Do not use more of it, do not use it more often, or do not use it for a longer time than your doctor instructed. Do not miss any doses and take the medicine at the same time each day. Do not take two doses together if you miss a dose.

What are Maxitrol side effects?

Like all medicines Maxitrol can cause side effects, including:

Common:

  • burning or stinging in the eye
  • irritation
  • itching
  • redness
  • swelling
  • eye irritation

Uncommon:

  • eye surface inflammation
  • increased eye pressure
  • blurred vision
  • sensitivity to light
  • drooping of eyelid
  • eye pain
  • increased tear production
