KARBAPIN

This medicine contains the active ingredient carbamazepine which belongs to a group of medicines called anti-convulsants. These medicines contain sedative, hypnotic, anti-anxiety and muscle relaxant properties, and they affect some functions of the brain like excessive electrical activity. Carbamazepine is prescribed for the prevention of some sort of epileptic fits, for the treatment of mood disorders and trigeminal neuralgia (pain and burning of the face).

Is Carbamazepine suitable for me?

Carbamazepine is not suitable for everyone. Do not use it

• if you are allergic to carbamazepine or other ingredients of this medicine
• if you have any heart problems
• if you have ever had problems with your bone marrow
• if you have a blood disorder porphyria,
• if you suffer from depression, anxiety or other mental problems and are taking drugs called monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs)

In particular, you must tell the doctor if you:

• have kidney or liver problems
• have porphyria (blood disease)
• have a history of alcohol and/or drug abuse 
• have increased pressure in your eyes, called glaucoma
• have mental health problems
• are pregnant, trying for a baby or breast-feeding

Carbamazepine interacts with other medicines. It is most important that you tell the doctor all the medications and herbal supplements that you are currently taking.

How should I take Carbamazepine?

This medicine is available in form of a tablet.

You should take carbamazepine exactly as instructed by your doctor or pharmacist. The doctor will prescribe your dose according to your needs and condition.

• The usual dose for the treatment of epilepsy is between 800 and 1,200 mg per day.
• The usual dose prescribed for trigeminal is between 600 and 1200 mg per day.
• The usual dose for the treatment of mood disorders is between 400 and 600 mg per day.

Do not use more of it, do not use it more often, or do not use it for a longer time than your doctor instructed. Also, this medicine works best if there is a constant amount in the blood. To help keep this amount constant, do not miss any doses and take the medicine at the same time each day. Do not take two doses together if you miss a dose.

What are Carbamazepine side effects?

Like all medicines Carbamazepine can cause side effects, including:

Very common:

• increased chance of infections
• dizziness and tiredness
• feeling unsteady
• disrupted movement control
• nausea, vomiting
• changes in liver enzyme levels
• skin reactions

Common:

• fluid retention and swelling
• weight increase
• low sodium in the blood
• confusion
• headache
• double or blurred vision
• dry mouth
